PUNE: In a novel attempt to take its various services to the common man, the postal department has roped in popular comedian Makarand Anaspure. It has produced a 28-minute video CD featuring six skits in the folk theatre format. Exploiting Anaspure's comedy to the hilt, the skits explain details of various postal schemes for savings and insurance, especially for senior citizens and farmers.
In one episode, the schemes unfold during a repartee between Anaspure and the village idiot. In another one, he convinces the village miser how it is better to invest his earnings in a post-office instead of burying it under various trees. In the episode on rural insurance schemes, Anaspure rises at his own funeral meeting and explains the insurance scheme to those present, before popping off again.
Interestingly, the CD also features 20 postal personnel from the Pune region, who have done a professional job of acting too. After losing out much of its traditional business to email and couriers, the postal department has been going in for modernisation and diversification with a vengeance. The new CD, released by the Union postal secretary in Pune last month, is another dynamic step. The film is already being used across the state to promote postal awareness.
"The CD has primarily been produced to help rural field staff create awareness about the post office among the masses. However, the whole film has become so enjoyable that we are now exploring various avenues to take it to every doorstep," said postmaster general Anil Joshi, Pune region. Besides handing over copies to government field publicity staff, Joshi is now thinking of showing the film on Doordarshan and at movie halls.
